However, by October of that same year, the studio had changed its mind and had restored Gunn as director. Production resumed after Gunn finished work on his film The Suicide Squad (2021) and the first season of its spin-off series Peacemaker. Gunn's return was publicly announced in March 2019. (2022). Cast

  • As the half-human, half-Celestial leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) was raised by an alien gang of smugglers and criminals known as the Ravagers after being kidnapped from Earth as a young child.
  • Gamora, played by Zoe Saldaa, is an orphan who is looking for penance for her previous transgressions. Thanos adopted her and taught her to be his personal assassin. Gamora, a Guardians member who was killed by Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), reappeared in Avengers: Endgame (2019) as a younger version of the character who travelled to the present; Saldaa reprises the latter role in this movie,  who is currently the Ravagers' leader.
Powered By:
  • Drax the Destroyer, played by Dave Bautista, is a Guardian and extremely skilled fighter whose family was murdered by Ronan the Accuser on Thanos' orders.  The actor, who expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play Drax, announced that Vol. 3 would be the last time he would play the character. Bautista expressed his desire to pursue more dramatic acting roles and called the decision to end his time with the character a "relief." This was due to the lengthy hours required to prepare for the role.
  • Gamora's adopted sister, Nebula, is played by Karen Gillan. Like Gamora, she was groomed by their adoptive father Thanos to be his personal assassin. Nebula is a member of the Guardians and a former Avenger. Gillan thought Nebula was changing into a "slightly different person" with more humour as she begins to recover psychologically after the death of Thanos, the cause of her torture and misery. Thanos was the source of Nebula's abuse and torment.  Vol. 3 completes the character arc James Gunn had in mind when he began writing and directing Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) by making the character evolve from a minor villain to a Guardian.
  • Mantis, played by Pom Klementieff, is Quill's half-sister and a member of the Guardians with empathic abilities.
Powered By:
  • Vin Diesel as Groot: A member of the Guardians who resembles a tree and Rocket's sidekick. He is known as "Swole Groot" because to his bigger, more buff size.
  • Bradley Cooper plays Rocket, a Guardian and former Avenger who is an expert with weapons and military strategy, based on a genetically modified raccoon.  According to Gunn, the movie chronicles Rocket's tale, including both his upbringing and "where he's heading," as well as how it connects to the other Guardians and the conclusion of this incarnation of the group.  A character arc that began in Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) and continued in Infinity War and Endgame is concluded in this movie.
  • Adam Warlock, played by Will Poulter, is a potent artificial being that the Sovereign developed in order to eliminate the Guardians.  Gunn characterised Warlock as a more conventional superhero compared to the Guardians, but not necessarily a hero, and said that his encounters with them presented "an interesting juxtaposition" to what their path had been.
  • Ayesha, played by Elizabeth Debicki, is the High Priestess of gold and the head of the Sovereign people. She had Adam Warlock created in that capacity to eliminate the Guardians.
  • As the powerful Ravager Stakar Ogord, Sylvester Stallone played the role.

  • Kraglin Obfonteri, played by Sean Gunn, is a member of the Guardians and a former Ravagers second-in-command.
  • Cosmo the Spacedog, played by Maria Bakalova, is a Guardians member who is a sapient dog who developed telepathic skills after being transported into space by the Soviet Union. Cosmo's gender was changed from male to female for the film by director James Gunn in honour of the character's initial inspiration, Laika, a Soviet space dog who was one of the first animals to travel to space. Bakalova provided motion capture for the character in addition to voice acting. In the first two Guardians movies and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (2022), the dogs Fred and Slate physically depicted Cosmo.
  • Chukwudi Iwuji, Rocket's creator and an expert in evolution, is known as the "High Evolutionary." He aspires to forcefully improve all living things into a "special race."  The character, according to Iwuji, is "narcissistic, sociopathic, but extremely charming," and he also has "something really Shakespearean about him, something very emotionally dark about him, and he's a lot of fun on top of all that."
Additionally, Daniela Melchior and Nico Santos have been cast in unspecified roles, with Melchior's part reportedly being a lesser role. Michael Rosenbaum returns as Martinex, a high-ranking Ravager, from his Vol. 2 role. It will be Callie Brand dressed as an extraterrestrial. Lylla, an anthropomorphic otter who is Rocket's friend and potential love interest, is also expected to make an appearance in the movie.

Development

Initial work

In addition to knowing the "core story" for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) while working on the first movie, Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) director and writer James Gunn revealed in November 2014 that he also has ideas for a potential third movie.  Despite this, he expressed uncertainty in June 2015 about whether he would participate in a third Guardians movie, adding that it would depend on how he felt following the production of Vol. 2.  Kevin Feige, the producer of the Guardians movies and president of Marvel Studios, revealed in April 2016 that a third instalment of the franchise would be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in "2020 and beyond."Gunn announced there would be a third movie in March 2017 "of course. There are no particular plans for the movie yet, but Marvel wants to create it "until something goes horribly—which is always possible, you never know," adding that they are still trying to figure it out ".  He said that he had not yet made up his mind about directing the movie and that he will decide on that as well as his next endeavour "over the next couple of weeks."  Gunn was reluctant to continue the project in part because he didn't want to work on it without Michael Rooker, whose Yondu Udonta character from the previous two movies passed away at the conclusion of Vol. 2.

In April 2017, Gunn made the decision to return to write and helm Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. After Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), the movie, according to him, would "conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy and help propel both old and new Marvel characters into the next 10 years and beyond." The third picture would "tie a lot of stuff together" from the first two, and it would provide "a lot of answers on a lot of different topics," in his opinion. He also believed that the three Guardians movies will "work together as a whole," creating one cohesive story.Gunn also intended to collaborate with Marvel on the "Marvel Cosmic Universe's" future.  Soon after finishing his duties as executive producer and consultant for Infinity War, he was scheduled to start work on Vol. 3.  Gunn said when he came back for the third picture, "If I didn't have a good notion of where we were going and what we were going to do, I wouldn't have said yes. I don't just get into something without having a plan in mind ".

Adam Warlock was originally planned for Vol. 2's script treatment, but Gunn and Feige recognised the character's significance to the cosmic aspect of the MCU and teased that he would emerge in Vol. 3. After the release of Vol. 2 in May 2017, Gunn announced that he will be making the third movie "over the next three years" and revealed that Pom Klementieff would return as Mantis.Additionally, he wanted Elizabeth Debicki to play Ayesha once more. Midway through June, Gunn had finished the first draught of his script treatment for the third movie and was debating whether to change certain character information that had been included in the backdrop of the first movie's mugshot sequence (when the Guardians are captured by the Nova Corps). The movie had a secret release date of May 1, 2020, which Gunn reaffirmed will happen "in a little under three years" later in September. Gunn had arranged to speak with Mark Hamill about maybe acting in the movie around the end of February 2018. Chris Pratt was scheduled to return as Peter Quill/Star-Lord in April, while Dave Bautista announced that he will return as Drax the Destroyer the following month. Before actual pre-production on the movie started, Gunn sent the finished first draught of the screenplay to Marvel at the end of June.

The first footage from the movie was shown during the Marvel Studios panel at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2022. Iwuji showed up at the panel dressed as the High Evolutionary, as was also mentioned as his role. Because the visual effects were not perfect enough for "multiple views and close study," according to Gunn, the tape was not made publicly available. Throughout the CCXP on December 1, 2022, an official trailer was published. It included Spacehog's "In the Meantime."Gunn's distinctive, raucous "Guardians of the Galaxy" tone is very much in place, according to Drew Taylor of TheWrap, who also remarked that there is "an undercurrent of tremendous melancholy." Rocket's memories and Star-Lord missing Gamora can be seen in the teaser, which, according to Variety's Carson Burton, indicates that the movie is "shaping up to be an emotional ending." The Verge's Jay Peters expressed interest in the clip as a "wild voyage across the universe" featuring several planets.
