Development

The Evil Dead (2013), a remake of The Evil Dead (1981), was directed by Fede lvarez, who also revealed there would be a sequel at the South by Southwest film festival.  Additionally, Sam Raimi and his brother Ivan Raimi stated their intentions to write Evil Dead 4; it was later clarified that the movie will be a follow-up to Army of Darkness (1992).  In March 2013, Bruce Campbell and Fede Alvarez said that their ultimate goal was to combine Ash Williams' and Mia Allen's stories in a seventh picture, which would be released after Alvarez's Evil Dead 2 and Raimi's Army of Darkness 2.Co-writer Rodo Sayagues informed DesdeHollywood on October 30, 2013, that he and lvarez will not be returning for the sequel.  Lvarez stated on Twitter that same month that the allegation was untrue.  Campbell declared that he will return to the Army of Darkness franchise as Ash in the sequel.  Raimi's participation as the film's director was afterwards confirmed.  Campbell expressed scepticism about a fourth Evil Dead movie by November.Campbell said, using Ash vs. Evil Dead on Starz as an example, that he thought the franchise's only successful future was via a premium cable network during a discussion at Fan Expo Canada in September 2017.

In November 2018, lvarez declared, "Right now, they're simply concepts. Nothing to formally announce. Don't Breathe 2 has a script, which we do have. The only difference is that. The script for Evil Dead 2 is unavailable. However, we did write the script for Don't Breathe 2. He added, "When I tweeted that, I was curious to see what people preferred. We were debating among ourselves what would most likely pique people's curiosity. Sadly, Evil Dead 2 took first place. Which, I suppose, is why, since it was one of my original works, I would have loved Don't Breathe 2 to win.Of course, Evil Dead has a larger fan base. Raimi stated, "We'd like to do another Evil Dead picture and in fact we're working on some ideas right now," when asked about the franchise's future on July 10, 2019. Raimi expressed interest in working with Campbell again, however Campbell had previously stated that he had left the character of Ash. The director is currently a successful "artist in demand," therefore he may not want to make a sequel at this time, he added, adding that the 2013 reboot sequel might be another option.

Casting

Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan had been chosen for the major parts, it was confirmed in May 2021. Nell Fisher, Morgan Davies, and Gabrielle Echols joined the cast in June 2021. Mia Challis joined the cast in July 2021.

Filming

On June 6, 2021, the first day of principal photography, Dave Garbett, started in New Zealand. Previously, Garbett worked as a cameraman on multiple Ash vs. Evil Dead episodes. Cronin said that filming had officially reached the halfway point on July 14, 2021. On October 27, 2021, the film's official completion date. Cronin revealed that more than 6,500 litres of fake blood were used throughout production.

Release

The international premiere of Evil Dead Rise is scheduled for March 10–19, 2023, at South by Southwest (SXSW),[31] before Warner Bros. Pictures releases it in theatres on April 21, 2023. StudioCanal UK has agreed to co-distribute the movie in the UK.

As part of a restructuring plan for Warner Bros.'s film distribution, which would see the studio relying less on HBO Max-only releases and more on theatrical releases, the movie was originally scheduled for a streaming-only release on HBO Max but was instead moved to a theatrical release in August 2022.
